58th Reunion at Barado’s
Below is the content of an email from Mudd Murphy about our 58th Class of 1960 Reunion Luncheon:
Dear Classmates,
It’s been over two weeks since we met for our 58th Class of 1960 Reunion Luncheon and I would like to take a moment to share with you some of the festivities.
First of all the weather was sunny and warm, just a perfect day to gather at Barado’s on the Water Restaurant and enjoy our luncheon together. The food and service at Barado’s was great, but the GREATEST EVENT was sharing time with old friends and classmates.
After enjoying our meal and witnessing Donny “The Cake Monster” Alger devour a Double Slice of Double Chocolate Cake before our very eyes, a 58 year old secret was unveiled and his wife Carol said, “Ah that’s nothing you should see what he can do to a whole cake set in front of him.” From Donny’s entertainment portion of the program we proceeded to go around the room the from to each table so everyone had a chance to take the floor and share with us about there families and what’s going on in there lives today. One of our classmates Terry Brown, came all the way from Phoenix Arizona to join us. Terry it was great to see you and hope you make plans to join us again next year.
On another note, you may recall I sent out an email a couple weeks before we were to meet expressing an idea about increasing the balance of our Class of 1960 bank account, which we voted on last year to donate our balance of $97.20 to the P.V. Moore Scholarship Endowment Fund honoring MR. Hughes, Patty’s Dad and our Principal. In the email it was suggested that we try to increase the amount in our account and perhaps turn it into a separate scholarship the school endowment fund.
Well you stepped up to the plate Classmates and answered the call. With your generous donations The Class of 1960 will be donating $832.20 to be used as seed money, to establish the William J. Hughes Scholarship Fund. No one deserves a greater thank you, than you The Class of 1960. I have spoken to Patty in recent days and she has expressed that her family feels humbled and grateful for what you have done to honor their Dad “Bill Hughes.”
Here is how the William J. Hughes Scholarship Fund will be established and continued at our Alma Meter.
Since our luncheon, and knowing we had a pretty generous gift to work with, I got in contact with Maureen Ladd and Elizabeth Kring, who help co-ordinate the P.V. Moore Scholarship Endowment Fund , just to learn how the scholarship process works. Basically the fund would be put into the P.V. Moore Scholarship Endowment account and a certain amount would be earmarked for the Wm J. Hughes Scholarship Fund.
After getting some basic understanding on how the process works I passed this information on to Patty. Since the scholarship will be to honor her father, the family gets the opportunity to set up some of the guidelines on how the fund will be used. As it stands, and this can be changes at any time with a letter to the CSCSD Endowment Committee. The Wm J. Hughes Scholarship will be set up and distributed over a ten year period, to an outstanding and deserving boy or girl from Central Square that has participated and graduated from the Oswego County B.O.C.E.S program.
Note: {At the very end of this email, I will include the name and address if you wish to send a contribution to the Wm J. Hughes Scholarship Fund.}
Just as a side note I would like to share a couple of things about Mr. Hughes you may not know. It was seventy five years ago this year that the Central Square School District became a “Centralized District” and still remains, in terms of land area, one of the largest school districts in New York State. Along with Paul V. Moore and Aura A. Cole, Mr. Hughes was an integral part of the team and has been referred to as the glue that held the centralization program together. The process began in 1941 and was not completed until 1943. Many of us were a part of the process as the on room schools were closed and we were brought together in Cleveland and Brewerton and finally on to the Central Square Campus. Many of us would not be friends and classmates today if it hadn’t been for the centralization of our school district.
Secondly, it was Mr. Hughes as a teacher and educator first, recognized that Vocational Education was just as important to educating young people to fulfill the needs of society as an Academic Education. Thus, he worked tirelessly for many years to help establish a B.O.C.E.S Vocational program in Oswego County. Today the Oswego County B.O.C.E.S program educates and trains hundreds of young people to fulfill good jobs. That’s why the Hughes Family chose to have an outstanding Vocational Student, that wants to further his or her chosen field, receive a scholarship in Mr. Hughes’s name.
In summary It seems every year somewhere in the gathering someone asks, “ how many were in our class?” Well, for the record, I got out our yearbook and counted 105 pictures of graduates. Pat Redhead has been keeping track of classmates that have deceased over the years and sadly enough we have to add two more to the list that passed away this past year.
Eleanor Westcott Miner and Barbra Bortel Hughes , according to Pat that brings the total number of deceased classmates to twenty three.
I want to put a wrap on this email and list all of those who attended this year and extend an invitation to everyone to make plans to attend the 59th Reunion on September 12th 2019.
Those in attendance for our 58th were.
